PECULIAR KNOB

DSO hematite mine

After initially operating for four years, Peculiar Knob (PK) mine was placed into care and maintenance by the previous owners in January 2015.

Peak Iron purchased the asset in July 2019 and recommenced operations in February 2020. Peak Iron initially commenced operations with stockpile reclaim exporting through Port Adelaide.

In November 2020, mining recommenced with exports through Whyalla Port when the South Australia government approved Peak’s revised Program for Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation (PEPR) to recommission the open pit. The mine is an open pit operation involving drilling and blasting, excavation, crushing and screening, followed by road and rail haulage to the port for export.

PK is currently producing 2.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) @ 64% Fe, hauling 100km by road and 630km by rail (via Wirrida rail loop) to export through Whyalla Port on Capsize vessels.

Peak Iron undertakes its operations at PK by the use of contract mining, crushing, and logistics services providers.

Located 120km southeast of Coober Pedy, Peculiar Knob is one of the highest-grade iron ore mines in Australia.

To date, Peak Iron, through its mining and logistics service providers, has shipped over 5 million dry metric tonnes (dmt) of direct shipping ore (DSO) hematite from Peculiar Knob with 3 million dmt remaining to be shipped.
