HAWKS NEST BUZZARD PROJECT
DSO hematite mine
The Buzzard Project direct shipping ore (DSO) hematite mine is in operation with an open pit inventory of 15 Mt @ 61% Fe.
Mining contractors commenced shipping high grade DSO hematite in July 2025.
The Buzzard Project Mining Lease (ML 6531) was granted to Peak Iron in November 2021.
Buzzard Project lies within the Hawks Nest Exploration License (EL 6395) and is located 125km south-southeast of Coober Pedy and 2.5km from the Stuart Highway. Buzzard Project is 50km southwest of Peak Iron’s operating Peculiar Knob Mine.
The Buzzard Project is situated within the Traditional Lands of the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara People, the Woomera Prohibited Area, and McDouall Peak pastoral station.
Peak Iron will extract iron ore using conventional open pit mining techniques. The iron ore will be transported in bulk from the mine site by both road and rail to port. All approvals have been granted and the site began shipping in July 2025.
Peak Iron undertakes its operations at the Buzzard Project by use of contract mining, crushing, and logistics services providers.
The Buzzard Project employs 180 full-time permanent staff during operation.
It is estimated that our project will generate in excess of $50 million in royalties to South Australia.
The Windy Valley Camp accommodates 208 workers from the Buzzard Project
