COMMUNITY

At Peak Iron, we strive to make a positive impact on the communities where we operate through initiatives such as sponsorship, partnerships, volunteering, and donations.

Our projects are situated near the community of Coober Pedy and operate on Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara country and Gawler Ranges country. Other funding support is provided to the communities of Glendambo and Kingoonya as well as families accessing remote learning through School of the Air (SOTA).

We work closely with Native Title Bodies, local and state government agencies, neighbouring mining companies and businesses, and other key stakeholders to ensure that our operations make a meaningful contribution to the community.

CLONTARF FOUNDATION

We are proud to partner with the Clontarf Foundation to support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men at the Coober Pedy Area School Clontarf Academy realise their potential.

The Clontarf Academy, established in the Coober Pedy Area School by the Clontarf Foundation in Term 3, 2021, is dedicated to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male students in developing positive attitudes, completing their education, and securing employment.

Our involvement with the Coober Pedy Clontarf Academy extends to various initiatives, including our recent participation in the Coober Pedy Interstate Basketball Carnival. This event successfully brought together over 40 students from Clontarf Academies based in Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Whyalla, Port Augusta, and Coober Pedy.

PEAK IRON - MURAL PROJECT

Peak Iron Mines Mural

Peak Iron mural at Windy Valley Camp.

We recently collaborated with the Coober Pedy Clontarf Academy, Coober Pedy Area School Alternate Learning Centre (ALC), and Native Title artists from Port Augusta to deliver a mural project.

Together, we carefully planned and produced a vibrant mural that has been installed at our Windy Valley Camp. The mural not only promotes and shares stories about Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Nation country and highlights the incredible talents of the Native Title artists and emerging local artists, but it also improves the outdoor eating area at Windy Valley Camp and is an educational tool for the resident workforce.

OTHER INITIATIVES

Coober Pedy Opal Festival

Peak Iron is a proud sponsor of the annual Coober Pedy Opal Festival, which celebrates the vibrant and culturally diverse community of the town as well as the rich tradition of the town’s opal mining. Drawing in an estimated attendance of over 1,200 people, the festival showcases the unique charm of Coober Pedy and serves as a catalyst for economic growth in the region.

Kanku-Breakaways Marathon

Peak Iron proudly sponsors the Kanku-Breakaways annual marathon, an event that includes running, walking, and cycling over the full-length of a marathon (42.2km) and half-marathon (21.1km) distances as well as 10km, 5km, and 2.5km distances.

The aim of the marathon is twofold: to promote the natural beauty and conservation value of the Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park to locals and visitors, and to encourage physical activity amongst the Coober Pedy population.

In addition, the event injects many economic benefits to local businesses as visitors explore the history of Coober Pedy and partake in the many activities in the town.

Royal Flying Doctor Service

Our Windy Valley Camp has established recycling facilities to collect used cans and donates the funds generated from recycling to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Peak Iron is dedicated to further supporting this essential primary health care service by matching dollar for dollar the recycling proceeds.

Supporting local businesses

Peak Iron prioritises local procurement where possible. We recognise the need to invest in the communities within the region where we operate, as this can attract and retain a local workforce.
